Over the last two decades, clear braces have skyrocketed in popularity. After all, they achieved what patients previously thought was impossible: discreet orthodontic treatment. While there are plenty of benefits to consider, it’s important to remember that there are many pros of traditional braces. To learn a few, read on!
Pro #1: They Can Correct Both Mild and Severe Orthodontic Issues
While Invisalign is both effective and discreet, it does come with some limitations. For example, only the metal brackets and wires can correct severely rotated teeth and complex bite problems. As a result, some patients need to get traditional braces before they are a candidate for clear aligners.
Pro #2: They Can’t Be Removed
In order for your teeth to be gradually shifted, constant (but gentle) pressure must be applied. Unfortunately, many patients with removable braces forget to put them back in, neglecting to meet the 22-hour-a-day wear time. The good news is that traditional braces can only be removed by your orthodontist. Therefore, you won’t have to worry about that during your treatment!
Pro #3: There Are Several Types to Choose From
With the hype around clear aligners, many patients forget (or are unaware) that traditional braces aren’t the only other option. Ceramic braces and self-ligating braces are also reliable teeth-straightening solutions! So, don’t hesitate to ask your orthodontist about all of the available treatments, not just Invisalign and traditional braces.
Pro #4: Less Responsibility
There are some aspects of Invisalign that are convenient, like less check-in appointments. However, there are inconvenient components as well, like cleaning your teeth and your trays separately, tracking your wear time to stay on track with your treatment, and storing your aligners properly to ensure they don’t break. So, if you are often forgetful, aren’t an oral hygiene fanatic, or constantly misplace things, then traditional braces may be the best solution for you.
Thanks to advancements in orthodontics, you don’t have to pick metal braces. That doesn’t automatically mean that you shouldn’t, however. Ultimately, the best way to make a decision is by scheduling an appointment with your orthodontist.
